Dr. W. Gary Anderson
Professor
Dr. Anderson graduated with a BSc (1991) and PhD (1995), from the University of St. Andrews Scotland. He then worked as an environmental consultant in Ontario for 3 years prior to returning to St. Andrews where he completed 2 post-docs working on the endocrine regulation of salt and water balance in the European lesser spotted dogfish, Scyliorhinus canicula, and the euryhaline bullshark, Carcharhinus leucas. This second post-doc was conducted in collaboration with Dr. Craig Franklin at the University of Queensland. Both these post-doc's laid the foundation for the importance of collaborations to Dr. Anderson in the development of the science he is interested in. He now works with a number of amazing researchers around the globe.
He became a faculty member at the University of Manitoba in 2004 where he found out that marine fishes were not terribly accessible on the prairies so immediately began working on the most accessible ancient fish - the Lake Sturgeon. He is interested in the evolution of key endocrine mechanisms regulating life sustaining processes such as energy balance and osmoregulation, with elasmobranchs and sturgeons being the primary fishes he works with. The lake sturgeon research focusses on key conservation issues related to rearing of lake sturgeon for stock enhancement and monitoring of existing stocks. Two societies were particularly welcoming when Dr. Anderson moved to Canada and he has been a regular attendee at the annual conferences at the North American Sturgeon and Paddlefish Society and the Canadian Society of Zoologists.

Dr. Frauke Fermann
Lab Technician Frauke comes from a background in the healthcare profession and has a PhD in virology with expertise in infectious diseases. So perhaps it was no coincidence she joined the lab in the summer of 2020. She brings a wealth of expertise in molecular biology, microscopy and cell biology techniques to the ongoing research in the lab. [email protected] |
Dr. Ian Bouyoucos
Postdoctoral Fellow I study aspects of the energy metabolism of so-called ‘ancient fishes’ to inform their conservation. My research with lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) aims to optimize diets of hatchery-reared sturgeon to improve the success of wild restocking programs. I combine olfactory nerve recordings with behavioural observation to establish dietary preferences and use techinques like respirometry and calorimetry to quantify food assimilation and energetic content. My research with Pacific spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthias suckleyi) aims to understand how temperature inluences the stress response of pelagic sharks as fisheries bycatch. Here, I test the temperature dependence of energy metabolism during and after exposure to acute thermal stress and exercise. Find out more about my research at ianbouyoucos.com [email protected] |
Dr. Alyssa Weinrauch
Postdoctoral Fellow My post-doctoral work focuses on the gastro-intestinal tract (GIT) of Lake sturgeon and the Spiny dogfish, with a specific focus on regulation of function. We utilise morphology to examine developmental progression of the GIT, while also measuring functional aspects such as digestive enzyme activity and nutrient transport. Furthermore, changes in peptide hormone expression provide insight into the regulatory processes involved over the course of development and/or in a changing environment. With my research, we hope to better understand how the GIT regulates its functional processes in the face of a changing environment in these early-diverging fishes. [email protected] |
Dr. Matt Thorstensen
Postdoctoral Fellow I study connections between genetics and physiology with a variety of sequencing and bioinformatic methods. My research with the lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) involves assembling the reference genome from different genomic and transcriptomic data, which is a task complicated by the species’ octoploidy. With the genome, I plan study questions about the evolution of the lake sturgeon’s stress response and how polyploidy may affect its great phenotypic plasticity. The lake sturgeon genome will be a resource for anyone interested in sturgeon research and conservation, useful for both genetic and physiological studies. I have broad interests overall, such as in population genetics, molecular physiology, comparative transcriptomics, and conservation genetics. https://github.com/BioMatt/ [email protected] |
Tyler Edwards
PhD student I am a native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, but earned my BSc honours specialization in biology at Nipissing University in North Bay, ON, where I was a varsity athlete. My M.Sc. research focuses on Electro-olfactography (EOG) method development to investigate juvenile lake sturgeon preferred feed from ages 0-1 years. I am specifically interested in developing a feed for juvenile lake sturgeon in captivity to ensure optimal development. [email protected] |
Morgan Anderson
M.Sc. Student I am originally from LaSalle, Ontario where I earned my BSc in Behaviour, Cognition and Neuroscience at the University of Windsor. There I was able to focus my undergraduate thesis on stress related metrics in captively bred lake sturgeon. Here at the University of Manitoba I hope to further study lake sturgeon through the use of eDNA. [email protected] |
